sony withdraws resistance fall of man
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Video game manufacturer Sony stood accused of gross hypocrisy today with the news that they have halted production of a video game in case it offends Muslims. Yet when similar concerns were raised last year over a Sony game by Christians, their complaints were ignored. In June 2007, the Church of England complained to Sony about a PlayStation game called “Resistance: Fall of Man.” The game featured a violent shoot-out in the nave of Manchester Cathedral in which the player has to kill hundreds of opponents. The Church complained that Sony did not have permission to use Manchester Cathedral in the game and concerns were expressed about the morality of using the cathedral’s interior in a violent video game. The Bishop of Manchester, the Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch, said: “It is well known that Manchester has a gun crime problem. “For a global manufacturer to re-create one of our great cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have guns battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible. “Here in Manchester we do all we can to support communities through our parish clergy. We know the reality of gun crime and the devastating effects it can have on lives. It is not a trivial matter.” The Dean of Manchester Cathedral, the Very Reverend Rogers Govender, added to the Bishop’s condemnation of the game: “We are shocked to see a place of learning, prayer and heritage being presented to the youth market as a location where guns can be fired.” Sony refused to remove the section of the game featuring the cathedral, saying: “Resistance: Fall of Man is a fantasy science fiction game and is not based on reality.” Fast-forward to this month and Sony are yet again embroiled in some trouble over concerns over one of their games raised by a religious group. But this time the complainants are Muslims. They have postponed the release of the game “LittleBigPlanet” after it was discovered that a background music track contained two phrases from the Koran. Copies of the game are being recalled from shops where they are already on sale and Sony has issued the following statement: “We’re sure that most of you have heard by now that one of the background music tracks that was licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Koran. “We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence this may have caused.” Hmmm double standards......... |
