yup the ref was a complete joke. He was jumping in before they even clinched and almost stopped the fight just cos Hatton was taking some punches even though he wasn't really hurt and was still fighting back. What a joke.
But you got to say he did get outclassed. Ok it wasn't hatton's best performance and maybe the ref didn't help but Mayweather was far too quick and clever for him. It's a shame he got stopped but thats boxing. It was also good too see he still had his sense of humour after the defeat ie; his first line in the interview "what a fluke that was" with a smile lol It was also nice to see the good side of mayweather (who was maybe trying to win some of hatton's fans) as you could over hear him saying to hatton off camera "The fans fucking love you man". During his interview he also stated that hatton was probably his toughest fight and that he still see's him as a champion in his eyes. In all Mayweather was actually paying a lot of compliments too hatton and his fans. So what now for Hatton. Well he certainly isn't packing in, but one thing for sure is that he is certainly dropping back down the his favoured weight division "Light welterweight". Also the defeat hasn't set him back any, as it is no shame to be beaten by the best pound for pound boxer and future hall of fame candidate |

The ref spoiled this fight early on, the last time i saw refereeing that bad was Sven Ottke Vs Robin Reid (Reid was actually warned for throwing a jab). I thought Hatton at the time and with a half dozen beers on board did ok, he smothered his work though which he's done in the past and neglected the body and it cost him. Mayweather did what he had to do and the finish was world class but i think it was 50/50 between it being down to Mayweather as well as Hatton going balls out, sloppy and leaving himself open to get hit.
It wasn't vintage Hatton by any means, there was alot stacked against him and he had a huge task in fighting Mayweather which was enough in it's self without having to fight the ref too. Mayweather may have been the bad guy running up to the fight but Cortez was the real villain of this story. Cortez was shocking he constantly warned Hatton even when Mayweather was holding, the point deduction was a joke "fair but firm" my arse he quite frankly looked paid off. |
