Big Fight Weekend:
Well checking my calendar and we’ve already got a big weekend of fights Firstly: Ruslan Chagaev v Matt Skelton (WBA heavyweight title fight) Londoner Matt Skelton (21-1), ex K-1 Kickboxer, MMA fighter and British Boxing champion is making his first challenge for world honors this weekend as he takes on Uzbekistan born Ruslan Chagaev (23-0-1) in Hamburg, Germany. Chagaev won the title with a majority decision win over 7 foot tall Russian goliath Nikolay Valuev last April. Skelton is a decent tough durable heavyweight but at 40 years old the Uzbekistan fighter may have too much for him also with the fight being in Germany which is the adopted home for most Eastern Block fighters a close decision will go to Chagaev. Prie$ty’s Picks: Chagaev by late stoppage or decision Roy Jones Jr. vs. Felix Trinidad (catchweight) Over state side one of the more disappointing fights made this year Two former greats, P4P kings and feared champions of there divisions collide in a who has what left match Roy Jones Jnr (51-4) once king of the light heavies now more circus side show act who hasn’t really done anything in the last 3-4 years other than tarnish his legacy is fighting Puerto Rican puncher Felix Trinidad(42-2). Trinidad has been semi retired for the last 6 or 7 years since losing his undeafeated record to the hands of Bernard Hopkins in 2001, fighting only 3 times since 2002, his last fight being a unanimous decision loss to silky southpaw Ronald “Winky” Wright in 2005. I get the feeling people are hoping these two can rekindle the magic they both once had but it’s unlikely Trinidad hasn’t fought in 2 ½ years and as he’s moved up in weight his power hasn’t carried over and Jones is a shell of his former self. Regardless of who wins they should both retire this maybe a blast from the past but it will more likely turn out like a damp squib. Everything seems stacked against Trinidad in this fight, over 2 years of ring rust and fighting 4 divisions above his best. He could catch Jones as his chin has failed him in the past but it’s been against bigger opponents Prie$ty’s Picks: Jones Jnr 8 TKO Under card has a few names and former champions on it but no fights of any real interest. Andrew Golota vs. Mike Mollo Roman Karmazin vs. Alex Bunema DeMarcus Corley vs Devon Alexander |

i agree with both of your decisions actually. I'm interested too see how Jones fairs actually because he's started to talk himself up again. Maybe he's got a little hunger left as he say's he want calzaghe but we'll just have too see. Yes both are washed up and well past it. Both could easily have retired undefeated but they carried on. I think on Jones' side he was just fighting for money with no real hunger, lets see if this is still the case

Both Trinidad and Jones say they want to fight Calzaghe and one thing that surprised me is how humble Jones especially has been. He basically said in an interview that Hatton went over to fight Mayweather and it's only fair they send a guy over here, also he said the only way to be Calzaghe is to knock him out which for someone with an ego like Jones to say that speaks volumes on how he rates Joe.
Shame really this fight nearly happened a couple of years ago when it would have meant more, could be a decent fight in the monetary sense but if Jones is impressive againt Trinidad to atleast give the impression he's turned the clock back alittle. |

yup heard all that and thats why i'm actually interested in seeing how he fights against Trinidad. If he puts in a good performance then maybe the fight with Calzaghe will happen and hopefully both will then bow out of the sport as legends putting in a brilliant last fight

Also there's UFC 80 - Rapid Fire is taking place at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena. Didn't see much point on doing a massive write up on here as I know not many of you follow MMA but It's free if you have Setanta sports, so if you chillin on saturday night with a few beers should be worth tuning in.
The vacant lightweight world title is on the line with two great fighters in BJ "The Prodigy" Penn and Joe "Daddy" Stevenson competing for it. should be a great fight both very exciting and aggressive on both the feet and the ground. There's a rematch between two top heavyweights in Gabriel Gonzaga and Frabricio Werdum there first fight was a barnstormer both Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champions and they both like to throw punches and kicks UFC 80 - Rapid Fire Event Preview HERE! Also on the card: Jess Liaudin Vs. Marcus Davis Wilson Gouveia Vs. Jason Lambert Jorge Rivera Vs. Kendall Grove Antoni Hardonk Vs. Colin Robinson Paul Kelly Vs. Paul Taylor James Lee Vs. Alessio Sakara Per Eklund Vs. Sam Stout |

well finally managed to find time to sit and watch the Jones fight.
And i've gotta say both fighters looked rather good in all honesty. Jones himself looked really confident, even took the first couple rounds easy so he could take a look and see what Tito was offering. As for Tito he looked good but never threatened. The fight was always going to be hard for him though as fella who has came up from welterweight to fight a former heavyweight champ is something i've never known and you could see why. Even though they weighed in at pretty much the same weight you could still tell who was natural and who wasn't. I think both could still have another fight or two in them. Would be nice too see Jones take on the winner of Hopkins and Calzaghe (hopefully Calzaghe) and for Felix Trinidad maybe a fight with Oscar de la Hoya. Now i've mentioned de la Hoya, rumour has it he could well be in for a re-match with Floyd Mayweather. Keep your eyes peeled. |

It was a decent weekend of fights
It felt like they turned the clock back, Jones especially looked fast and elusive. It was entertaining to watch, I think it helped that both these two are well past there primes and have deteriorated equally which allowed for a good fight. But either of these two going against hungry top guys would result in both picking up a loss and looking there respective ages. That said Jones seems to have realised even though his chin perhaps doesn't hold up any more against solid Light Heavies there's enough granite to hold out against smaller fighters moving up hence him calling out Clazaghe and DeLaHoya. Didn't see a great deal of the Skelton fight just the odd round and the result but from what I've saw and read the decision went to the right fighter, though the german judging was typically homer decision. The UFC was great too, they showed 8 of the 9 bouts which is usually unheard of. There was some brutal knock outs, the main event between BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson was an absolute blood bath and two Brits Paul Taylor and Paul Kelly scooping up fight of the night with a mini 3 round war. Great Stuff ![]()
